It’s time to introduce our second guest speaker for Function+Form this weekend: Jono Smart – and let me tell you that man is on a roll. Though this proverbial roll is actually a potters wheel which unbelievably he only discovered a few years ago after having spent time travelling and working as a landscape gardener.

His aptitude for the craft is second to none and his clean and contemporary style is a perfect fit for our crowd this Saturday where he’ll be holding his first talk about his work and journey from garden shed to potters barn.

He says: “The first time I sat at a pottery wheel I felt at home, It was natural and comfortable. I’ve been making every day since.

I tend towards straight lines and simple forms. I feel this gives me freedom to experiment with texture, tone, colour, groups and scale. I gravitate towards white and grey but find unexpected happiness in green and blue.”

Jono wants to make things that are used every day. Things that become part of daily routines and rituals. That become part of Sunday morning breakfasts, remind you of a friend, or get placed each night on a bedside table which is quite possibly the most down to earth and humble wish I’ve heard from a craftsman in a long time.

I can’t wait to handle, touch and feel Jono’s vessels as he likes to keep the outside untreated so it can age, have character, feel human and not too precise, pristine or mechanical but just natural.

RENOVATED TOWNHOUSE IN VESTERBRO | CPH

11 November 2015

renovated townhouse, vesterbro, copenhagen, Marie Rasmussen, architect, mix of old and new, inherited antiques, personal art, character, style, texture, styling, trend, different shades of white, subtle nuances, neutral colour palette

Life is crrrrazy busy this week with preparations for our first Function+Form event on Saturday but I couldn’t resist sneaking in this gorgeous renovated townhouse, located in Vesterbro outside Copenhagen.

The owner Marie Rasmussen is an architect and has skilfully furnished her new pad with a mix of inherited antiques and modern design classics which adds real character to the period apartment perfectly illustrated in the mix of chairs around her dining table.

Her professional expertise comes in handy and she used different shades of white for the ceiling, stucco, window frames and walls to create subtle nuances when the light floods in.

I like how Marie managed to personalise her home with selected pieces of art and inherited antiques without overwhelming and cluttering the space. All the while sticking to a calm, neutral colour palette and using lots of different textures like wood, leather and textiles.

This is definitely one for the Pinterest board.

ENRICH AND ENDURE | APRON MAKER

6 November 2015

Enrich-and-Endure-01

Not long now before our inaugural Function+Form event kicks off and we’re over the moon that Northern Irish apron maker Sarah Quinn from Enrich and Endure will be one of our guest speakers.

I featured Enrich and Endure on here before and loved their genuine passion and enthusiasm to revive the local linen industry and combine craftsmanship with modern design.

Setting out as a homewares company co-founders and siblings Sarah and Lorcan were keen to explore other uses for Irish linen which is one of the strongest fibres known to man. Being also obsessed with quality food and good coffee the idea of creating an apron kept creeping up and they worked with their favourite coffee shop to design and create their first set of linen aprons.

It is an innovative use for a time-proven fabric and Enrich and Endure can now offer a range of customisable aprons that can accommodate any brief whether it be different colours, extra pockets or longer straps each project is a true collaboration.

Sarah and Lorcan sum up: “Our ethos is pretty simple – quality materials, longevity, local craftsmanship and top-class design. So no matter how often you wrap it around you, rub your hands down it or put in a hard days graft in it; it just gets better with age.”

All aprons are handmade in Northern Ireland with an obsessive attention to detail and I can’t wait to hear more about their journey and feel the quality of their aprons in just over a week at Function+Form.

Make sure you follow the hashtag #wearefunctionandform on the day to see what we get up to.

When online community atmine asked me if I wanted to take part in their monthly styling competition I jumped at the chance, not least because I got to use Falcon enamelware which now comes in a lovely black – can’t resist a bit of monochrome.

November is all about table setting on atmine.com and I do enjoy creating an inviting environment for friends and family. Especially as the days draw in and we all get cozy inside I like to fill the house with some reassuring smells wafting from the oven.

Don’t get me wrong I’m by no means a domestic goddess and I’ve opted here for a autumn and winter staple with a bit of extra spice: A hot apple crumble with vanilla infused creme fraiche. What can I say? The smell and taste was divine and I could just about stop my dudes from licking the plates.

You can find the recipe, based on Nigel Slater, below

So let me tell you about the COMPETITION and your chance to win a Falcon product set of your choice. Plus there are two runner ups who will receive a pie dishes & tea towel gift set in quintessential pillar box red. Whop, whop!

For your chance to enter you’ve got to upload your table setting to the at{mine} community in the ‘Table Setting’ category and use the hashtag #StyleAtMine in the comment to your picture. You can also play along and enter on Instagram by uploading your table setting styling. Just make sure you use the hashtag #StyleAtMine so we know you’ve entered and follow and tag @atmine and @falconenamel.

The competition runs throughout November and is open worldwide so double your chances by uploading to both atmine.com and Instagram.

And now to the best smelling recipe that conjures up autumn like no other. *drumroll*

HOT APPLE CRUMBLE WITH VANILLA INFUSED CREME FRAICHE
INGREDIENTS

1kg/2lb 3½oz Bramley apples
pinch sugar, to taste
1 tbsp water or apple juice
100g/3½oz plain flour
75g/2½oz butter
50g/2oz rolled oats
100g/3½oz demerara sugar
½ tsp ground cinnamon
½ tsp ground cloves
grated nutmeg
500g creme fraiche
1 vanilla pod

METHOD (adapted from Nigel Slater)

Preheat the oven to 200C/400F/Gas 6.

Wipe the apples and cut them into quarters, then remove the cores and slice each piece in two. Put them into a pan, taste a slice for sweetness and add a sprinkling of sugar accordingly. Add a tablespoon of water or apple juice and cook over a medium heat for about five minutes, until the apples start to soften. Transfer the apple mixture to a shallow ovenproof pie dish.

Mix the flour and butter until the mixture looks like breadcrumbs. Stir in the oats, the brown sugar and your sweet spices (cinnamon and cardamom) and sprinkle over the cooked apples in the pie dish. Grate some nutmeg on top and transfer to the oven to bake for 30 minutes or until crisp and golden-brown on top and, hopefully, some juice has soaked through the crust.

Scoop out your vanilla pod and stir into the creme fraiche.

Serve, savour, indulge, add another log to the fire and put your feet up. It’s time to hibernate.

MY MONTH ON INSTAGRAM | OCTOBER 2015

Even though I always mourn the end of summer at this time of year I’ve got to admit that autumn is a particularly pretty season with it’s beautiful changes of colour omnipresent. It makes saying good-bye to summer just that little bit easier.

The boys have had a blast playing outside during the milder temperatures with piles of leaves, jumping in puddles and hunting for spiders and bugs. The ultimate highlight came at the end of the month though when they took part in their first trick or treat around the neighbourhood.

November is shaping up to be another exciting month with hosting our first Function+Form event – a new collaborative gathering combining relaxed, informal dining with handcrafted design. Check out the website for more details and follow the hashtag #WeAreFunctionAndForm on the day.
