A couple of weeks ago I went to the launch of Dorset Series Two by Another Country – one of my all time favourite British contemporary craft furniture and lighting designers.

Inspired by British country kitchen style as well as traditional Scandinavian and Japanese woodwork Another Country aims to re-interpret the spirit and functionality of these honest forms of furniture for a modern customer. Beautifully finished and built to last, both in terms of construction and style their products are made from certified solid woods in the UK and Europe ensuring to work in a sustainable way in their workshop in Dorset.

Like any piece of craftsmanship you can only really appreciate it’s quality and finish when you’ve laid hands on it and let me tell you I wanted to stroke those stools and desk all night.

Alongside this beautiful new series of furniture and lighting Another Country exhibited The British Surfing Landscape – A series of work by photographer Tom Shaw looking at the landscape of the UK at its most popular surfing spots. The style and tone of these photographs ooze the same calm, sophisticated ease as the handcrafted products and show that you don’t have to head abroad to find some great surf spots.

THE ARCHITECTS SUMMERHOUSE

15 July 2016

architecture, summerhouse, denmark, north zealand, traditional, contemporary, contrast, aluminium, glass, stone, wood, Christian Cold, Entasis, character, surroundings, pine, cedar clad, zac monroe, inside out homes, channel 4, uk, tv, living concepts

I’m showing you the architects summerhouse today located in sleepy North Zealand, Denmark, and situated amongst beautiful pine trees built by it’s owner Christian Cold with a deliberate ‘split personality’.

On the one hand a simple almost barn-like building, clad in natural untreated cedar oozing warmth, tradition and comfort and on the other hand a sharp aluminium and glass annex with a dramatic roof line and attitude.

It’s a stunning mix and I love how Christian has set this futuristic annex at a right angle so you can appreciate it’s shape and construction from the inside as well as from the large sun deck. To bring these two very different characters together materials on the inside have been kept consistent in neutral shades of black, grey and white to draw the eye outside and take in the beautiful surroundings.

This place also reminds me of Zac Monro’s new programme ‘Inside Out Homes’ on UK’s Channel 4 where he tries to break down the boundaries between inside and outside through innovative design and challenging traditional living concepts. The first episode aired last night and I’m already hooked, just wished they were a bit more transparent about budgets.

TRAVEL | 9HOURS HOTEL JAPAN

2 July 2016

9hours hotel, japan, urban, basics, travel, places, business people, overnight stay, concept, design, simple, modern, style, trend, monochrome, claustrophobic, honeycomb, comforting

After letting off some steam about Brexit on the blog yesterday I feel ready to move on and back to more inspirational content and the 9hours Hotel in Japan fits the Stylejuicer values perfectly.

With it’s simple, modern design this chain of urban hotels strips back all the fluff and upsell like spa, dining, bar and expansive lobby to concentrate on the basics: take a shower (one hour), sleep (seven hours) and get yourself dressed and ready for the next day (one hour). Aimed at travelling business people and overnight stay nine hours is all you need to reset your day.

I like the concept in theory and absolutely adore the simple graphics and monochrome look but I wonder if I would feel slightly claustrophobic in these honeycomb pods where the noises of the other guests might keep me awake all night. Then again it might be quite a comforting feeling knowing that you’re sleeping in a big group.

I guess there’s only one way to find out. Book me on the next flight to Japan!

BREXIT | IT’S BEEN A FUNNY FEW WEEKS

30 June 2016

funny few weeks, brexit, britain, british, public, vote, referendum, european union, devastated, scared, culture, mix, hodgepot, tolerance, individual, critical, speechless, anglophile, integrated, humour, leader, sheep, eccentricity, quirky, rituals

Moving house, designing a new AW collection for Wild Boys & Girls and the decision by the British public to exit the European Union has had me paralysed. Sort of like a sudden death where you want to hit the reset button so everything goes back to how it was before. I just can’t believe this actually happened. Brexit? WTF!

I haven’t felt like posting and writing about my inspirations. It felt wrong and meaningless. Truth is: I’m devastated and scared for our future. I made a choice to live and work in this country nearly 20 years ago and have embraced the British culture and people with enthusiasm becoming a real Anglophile.

I love the sense of humour, the famous stiff upper lip, the British eccentricity and quirky rituals. The fact that they don’t mind making a fool of themselves – how ironic! The mix of cultures from around the world and the diversity that comes with it makes this society rich and colourful. I feel completely accepted and integrated into this hodgepot which I put down to a deeply ingrained sense of tolerance and championing of the individual. Britains are critical. They question authority. They are not sheep following a leader. This is what I love about Britain.

So what happened? Has this nation collectively lost their marbles? I’m speechless.

NEW TEEN BED BY RAFA KIDS

17 June 2016

rafa kids, new teen bed, growing, generation, no headboard, low, versatile, day bed, sofa, agata, artek, adventure, wild boys and girls, style, trend, kids corner, quality, strength, flexibility, sustainably sourced, European Birch plywood, non-toxic water-based Scandinavian lacquers, style, trend

My friends over at RaFa have filled another gap in the market and designed a new teen bed in two different widths (90cm and 120cm) to accommodate the growing RaFa generation.

There’s no headboard which makes it even more versatile and means you can switch it’s position as often as you please. I also like the fact that it’s very low and even though it’s a large piece of furniture it’s elegant lines don’t impose on the room and it can easily be transformed into a daybed or sofa.

All of RaFa’s furniture is produced to the highest standards from sustainably sourced European Birch plywood which is flexible whilst providing high strength and finished with two layers of non-toxic water-based Scandinavian lacquers.

The shots were styled and taken by the talented duo Agata and Arek, the founders and creative heads behind RaFa kids and I’m so pleased to see how well the Wild Boys And Girls ADVENTURE poster works in the room.
