IKEA INSPO | HERRINGBONE WORKTOP

Some Ikea inspo today I found over the weekend. Isn’t the walnut herringbone table/worktop just gorgeous?

The dark polished wooden surface gives a bit of a luxurious, masculine edge and works so well with industrial elements like the black metal trestle legs and vintage style work lamp. I quite like the grey herringbone throw too since I always get cold sitting at my desk. Great styling by Pella Hedeby as always and shot by Kristofer Johnsson.

It seems the herringbone worktop is not yet available in the UK but it can’t be long now… #hurryupikeauk

SPRING NEWS FROM STELTON

Some Spring news from Stelton today who seem to have heard my silent plea through endless hours of hanging out in the cold playground and added this new aesthetic and functional thermos cup to their I:cons collection.

The To Go Click cup has a state-of-the art ‘smart click’ function that lets you open and close the cup easily so you can drink from the full 360 degrees of the cup as if there were no lid. And in case you wondered about the environment rest assured the cup is also BPA- and phthalate-free.

Another icon I’m pretty excited about is the strikingly beautiful Circle water bottle with it’s unique open/close function. The twisted design provides a natural physical connection with the bottle, starting from the ergonomic grip provided by its twisted design. Designer Maria Berntsen says,

“It is the intuitive feeling for the nature of the material and the sensuousness of the form that is important to me. I’m always trying to work out a form that I feel speaks to your senses. You have to feel like touching the form/design and feel joy in surrounding yourself with it in your daily life”.

I couldn’t have put it better myself.

And to finish off I have to mention the gorgeous new soft colours of the To Go Click cup and the iconic EM77 vacuum jug – designed by Erik Magnussen in 1977 – which are inspired by Scandinavian evenings by the sea and sandy beaches with gentle summer breezes.

Spring I’m ready for you.

INTERIORS CRUSH | YOGA STUDIO IN CONVERTED WAREHOUSE

13 March 2017

Starting the week off with a crush of epic proportions, the interior of this yoga studio in a converted warehouse in Sydney was designed by Karen Abernethy who translated the spiritual concept of light and reflection beautifully within this space.

Yoga has been a bit of a lifesaver for me for a long time now. I initially got into it because of work stress, mental as well as physical, sitting at the computer for 12 hours a day takes its toll eventually on neck, shoulders and back. I continued with my practice through both pregnancies and after a few crazy sleep-deprived baby years got back into it thanks to a wonderful local teacher.

I can’t rate the benefits of yoga high enough. For me it’s as if my whole body gets stretched, bent and simply wrung out from top to toe with the added benefit of a relaxing meditation at the end of it. Not just my body feels calm and energised but equally my mind is given much needed perspective from the daily grind and stresses of family life.

So you can imagine how my heart skipped a beat when I came across the Humming Puppy Yoga Studio. The actual studio space sits above the reception and changing rooms at the top of the warehouse for minimal disruption to your flow. The floor is covered with black plywood panels and there are thick dark curtains to restrict the incoming light helping to create the perfect atmosphere for meditation and reflection. Elements of the old warehouse are very much embraced by leaving the ceiling exposed but painted in black and giving the brick walls a distressed white wash.

The reception area and changing rooms below are separated by a mesmerising transparent angled screen which appears to shimmer and change colour as you move around. I think I’m most in love with the locker area though which is kept intimate and dark setting you up for your session. And please check out the stunning water fountain fed by a single pipe coming out of the dark from above – simple, elegant and functional.

Namaste friends.

SOFT MINIMALISM WITH POPS OF COLOUR AND PLANTS

9 March 2017

soft minimalism, colour pops, decor, soft furnishings, plant, plant family, designer furniture, white washed, apartment, interiors, home, spring, eames, herman miller

Showing you some soft minimalism today with splashes of colour and a cluster of beautiful ornamental plants since it’s one of the first Spring days here in the UK.

The white-washed top floor apartment is situated in the Dutch town of Deventer and though the owner is a self-confessed design addict he’s not overly precious about his decor and designer furniture merely appreciating the craftsmanship and design of classics pieces by Eames and Herman Miller.

After the prolonged grey wether these cheerful pops of colour and little plant family are just what I need. Hope Spring has arrived for you too.

HOUSE W, TAIPEI | BRINGING IN LIGHT, PLANTS AND AIR

2 March 2017

house w, taipei, taiwan, townhouse, kc design studio, air, light, plants, structural glass, semi transparent, metal mesh facade, trend, industrial look, concrete, architecture, interiors

Despite being located in a densely populated area of Taipei in Taiwan KC design studio managed to bring light, plants and air into this small three storey townhouse simply called, House W.

To overcome the houses’ disadvantaged location KC design studio opened up the roof and installed structural glass as part of the flooring on every level. This transparent core lets light travel all the way to the ground floor giving much needed daylight to the open plan kitchen, dining and living area.

Their second radical decision was to set the facade back and putting a metal mesh in its place. This creates semi transparent small outside spaces on each floor allowing the owners to bring in plants and greens whilst giving much needed air flow and a wonderful space to sit and relax.

I’ve been featuring a lot of extraordinary architecture lately – partly because I haven’t come across many equally extraordinary interiors. But the main reason is that even though these houses are out of many people’s reach financially (certainly mine) I believe you can always pick up interesting details and ideas from spaces that have had less constraints on budgets. Boutique hotels, bars, cafes and restaurants as well as any public building incorporates a myriad of ideas, details and materials that can translate into your own home. All it needs is some closer inspection and an open mind.

This home is fascinating for me as they’ve achieved an open-plan, modern and industrial look on a vertical scale. Bringing in plants and greenery has softened the look and added another layer of interesting texture. I like the juxtaposition of rough concrete beams next to the sleek stainless steel kitchen which is cleverly integrated into the staircase to make use of the limited space and to keep the ground floor as wide and open as possible. A design trick you may have seen in my blog post of an Islington conversion here a few weeks ago.

I hope you share my enthusiasm for this unusual space and it’ll give you some inspiration for your own home. It’s certainly got me thinking.
