Although completed back in 2014 I’ve only just come across this gem of a retail space that is the Aesop Emporium in Melbourne.

Designed by Kerstin Thompson Architects I love the dark luxurious and contemporary feel of it. Aesop is renowned for pushing the boundaries when it comes to their shop interiors and here in the UK the first store in Richmond was designed by Ilse Crawford who put the hand and wash basin in the centre of the shop emphasising the essence of skincare.

The interior of the Melbourne flagship reflects the dark brown and black of Aesop’s packaging which is a nod to the old apothecary glass bottles as well as the high quality ingredients they use. Sustainably sourced hardwood ply made from local Australian spotted gum timber is used throughout and accented with brass details for taps and basins and the use of edge razor edge technology to produce graphic wood perforations. The lighting was designed in collaboration with PSLab who used matt black shades in simple contemporary shapes to support the rich, dark and intimate mood of the interior.

INTERIORS CRUSH | GREY GREEN APARTMENT IN SWEDEN

25 May 2017

grey green apartment, sweden, interiors crush, real estate, photography, style, styling, textures, exposed brick wall, warm, welcoming, inviting, trend

I’m in love with this grey green apartment in Sweden. A proper interiors crush down to the fact that the Swedes really got their act together when it comes to real estate photography. The interiors are styled to glossy (magazine) perfection and before you know it you’re hooked.

There’s no single wow factor in this apartment but the use of textures like exposed brick wall, white stained floorboards, cosy sheep skins and a fluffy cloud ceiling lamp in the bedroom all contribute to a stylish yet warm and welcoming feel. The choice of a grey green wall colour in the living area adds warmth and neatly breaks up the long open plan kitchen, dining, living space.

From the entrance the floorboards lead you straight to the back of the apartment where a minimal hanging rail displays some favourite frocks and french doors lead out to a small balcony that flood the space with light.

The apartment is so light and inviting that I’m not surprised it’s already sold. Now I just need to find my next interiors crush.

FOR THE HOME | COFFEE AND CAKE WITH AMARA

As long as I can remember coffee and cake has been an essential part of my life. I don’t mean coffee AND cake but the combination of the two which calls for a break in the (work) day, time out, a moment to sit down and enjoy the complimentary flavours, the unmistakable bitterness of the coffee and the sweetness of the cake. For me one is (almost) no good without the other. But apart from the culinary experience there is a whole culture behind it which I believe you can only truly understand if you’ve grown up with this tradition.

In Germany coffee and cake is celebrated every day around mid afternoon. It’s as casual or as formal as you like it to be and you can set your table accordingly. My fondest memories are sitting in my grandparents kitchen on their farm and my grandmother slowly pouring the hot water into the chipped porcelain coffee filter, filling the air with that unmistakable coffee aroma and creating the perfect brew. She always made sure we had a something sweet and if she hadn’t got any left over cake from the weekend we had a piece from the local bakery or at worst some home made biscuits or bread and jam. It was a chance to get together, sit informally around the table, savour and engage in conversation, from the farmer to the farmhand, young and old and whoever else happened to be around, coffee and cake was all inclusive and above all a bonding experience.

The Swedes have their fika, the Danish like their Hygge and the Germans have their coffee and cake. A tradition that is still so loved and important to people that they like to set the table with nice ceramics, cutlery and – if you’re really posh – some napkins.

It was interesting how these and many other wonderful memories came flooding back to me when I styled this table setting with the beautiful Pure porcelain tableware and stunning matt gold cutlery from online retailer Amara. The glaze on the ceramics by Serax is totally unique on each piece as is the irregular shape of the plates and cups which make it so tactile and fascinating to look at. In an age of mass production we seem to be drawn to individuality and like to surround ourselves with things that are unique. The urban jungle movement is testament to this as is the return to values of craftsmanship, handmade and customisable items.

Why don’t you celebrate coffee and cake German style? Setting the table with your favourite pieces and gather your loved ones around to savour, indulge and spend some quality time together. Slow living mid afternoon and remember: no phones allowed!

ESCAPE AND RECONNECT WITH NATURE AT THIS FORESTERS HOUSE

20 May 2017

weekend, foresters house, natural reserve, sweden, Petra Gipp Architecture, environment, minimalist, cubic design, picture windows, tarred wooden cladding, reconnect with nature, style, trend

It’s the weekend and all I want to do is escape to this Forester’s House and go off-grid, disconnect from social media and forget about the stressful tantrum-ridden school runs, worries about what to cook for dinner and the overflowing laundry basket.

The house and adjacent service building sit within a natural beech wood reserve in Sweden and were designed by Petra Gipp Architecture with the intention of blending in with the natural landscape and minimising the impact on the environment.

The minimalist, cubic design sits slightly above the ground giving a higher viewpoint from the inside across the lake and woods. Naturally, I was drawn to the large picture windows and tarred wooden cladding but the spectacular views is where I want my eye to wander, rest and reconnect with nature.

Wishing you a peaceful weekend.

IKEA DESIGN FESTIVAL | ROOM FOR … INSPIRATION

18 May 2017

It’s been a few weeks (months!? *shock*) since I went to the Salone in Milan but I wanted to share these beautiful images with you from the IKEA Design Festival. Swedish super stylists Pella Hedeby and Anna Lenskog Belfrage created four intimate settings showcasing how to live at home with a ROOM FOR… creation, compact living, harmony and growing.

I loved exploring these spaces and picking up trends, small details and ‘hacks’ that make a house a home. The Barsö (plant) trellis used as an inspiration / pinboard was one of my favourites and I loved the idea to place a couple of Falsterbro wall shelves next to each other to create a continuous hanging and display area – perfect if you haven’t got space for a cabinet or storage unit.

The Festival was held in a large warehouse in the Lambrate district with plenty of room to showcase new product, collaborations and installations like live drawing sessions and sound engineering. Sadly I missed the chance to meet some of the designers and engineers behind the products but I’m working on a blog post showing you new product from the collaborations. Watch this space!
