COLOUR BLOCK BEACH HOUSE BY STUDIO UDA

1 August 2013

This beach side apartment and holiday home in Juan les Pins, France is referred to as the ‘fun house’ by their creators and architects Studio UdA.

‘Fun’ is a fitting description for the interior design that tackles the concepts of holiday time and sharing this tiny space of 40sqm inside an apartment block dating back to the 60s and 70s. The view of the sea is arguably the apartments key selling point and the brief was to provide a spacious lounge area and two separate sleeping quarters, all with sea views. This led to the creation of lightweight structures inside the apartment that are easy to assemble, relatively inexpensive and can be set up according to the inhabitant’s taste and whims, while constantly offering views towards the outside. Well, how much fun is that!? You can move your bedroom around if you feel like it.

A coastal colour scheme is reflected inside and just like life on the beach, the physical boundaries and cultural differences between people and the various activities they engage in are incorporated. From relaxation, children’s games or meal times, all activities are reflected in different shades and tones which enhances a sense of sharing inside the domestic space.

As Studio UdA describes:

‘Fun House’ because sharing is always an enjoyable experience.

THE BRICK HOUSE

I love Australian architecture. It’s innovative, clever, functional, contemporary and most of all aesthetically pleasing.

Clare Cousins Architects are masters at their craft as you can see from this beautifully designed and renovated Edwardian house in Prahran*, Melbourne. Describing the project Clare says:

Craving privacy from looming neighbouring flats two new structures were conceived to cocoon a private central courtyard space between them. The house extension curves to maximise its northern orientation and to visually incorporate the native landscaping into the house.

Designed for a young family the house caters for their needs now and in the future. A flexible space, referred to as the studio, is housed on top of the new garage forming a double story mass at the rear of the site to help screen large neighbouring buildings. The sculptural first floor contains a studio and bathroom with ribbed timber cladding that continues across the west-facing windows to provide solar protection.

What did I tell you: clever, functional and beautiful! I love the innovative use of brick references throughout the house in the black splash back kitchen tiles, the white fireplace tiling and the smaller vertical bathroom tiles – all in brick style pattern. The outside also plays with raw timber pattern and linear spacing.

I’m sure this won’t be the last time you’ll see Clare Cousins Architects on STYLEJUICER.

* Wikipedia tells me that Prahran Market is one of the premier fresh food markets in Melbourne and has existed on the same site for over 125 years.

RESTORED COUNTRY HOME IN TASMANIA

17 July 2013

For most of us Tasmania feels a long way away but what a treat of a home when you finally make it there.

Edwina and Mark were married on the porch of their beautifully restored country home in which they have clearly invested a lot of love and attention to detail. The doors that form the main entrance are antique French and Edwina painted the floorboards in the main hallway in a checkerboard pattern which draws you inside.

The changing tableau in the hallway features beachcomb finds and the fact that Edwina grows her own peonies – my favourite flower – is the icing on the cake.

STUNNING MODERNIST VILLA IN SKIATHOS, GREECE

A breathtaking view and beautiful sunny surroundings always help when you’re building your dream home but this design has been meticulously thought through and the result is simply stunning.

The villa cleverly merges inside and outside, maximising the benefits of both and minimising the impact on the surrounding landscape. There are various flexible panels and glazed screens providing coziness without sacrificing the open-plan living.

The infinity pool is strategically placed making the most of the view and creating a cooling breeze over the terrace and into the living area. The design even has green credentials with photovoltaic panels powering the pool mechanics and grey-water recycling for irrigation and toilet flushing. Trees are integrated and stand undisturbed with a green roof that blends into the landscape.

Get ready to dive in and dream…
