INTERIORS CRUSH | LONDON LOFT DESIGN

20 February 2014

William-Tozer-Loft-in-London-01

Hey, that’s me! There at the desk! What you didn’t recognize me? Well, a girl can dream, can’t she. What a fabulous space for a home office!? I’m sure I’d produce much better work in such an environment or maybe I’d just get distracted stroking the beautiful cupboards and desk.

I love the fact that even though this is a big industrial loft in London’s East End architect William Tozer has managed to create intimate cosy spaces for the needs of a modern lifestyle. Artworks are deliberately placed and fit perfectly with the sourroundings. Where else would you be able to display a 2x2m painted street sign but in a space that’s reminscent of a gallery.

You’ve probably guessed but the home office is my favourite spot. It’s a great example of how in-built custom made furniture in sexy, smooth, dark wood and rough, exposed concrete can sit happily together creating a special atmosphere of luxury urban living.

Kitchen, dining and living area are all open-plan and expose more industrial details like pipework and open shelving. But the best bit has to be the panoramic views of the city and the wrap-around terrace connecting to the outside and the urban environment.

A proper Interiors Crush!

PARISIAN CHIC BY GILLES ET BOISSIER

18 February 2014

Gilles-et-Boissier-Paris-interior-design-via-yatzer-07

Interior design duo Gilles et Boissier created this phenomenally beautiful apartment giving us a masterclass in contemporary Parisian Chic.

When the ‘bone structure’ of a place is so special it comes with great responsibility to create something extraordinary. It’s actually the designers Patrick Gilles and Dorothee Boissier’s own apartment and they managed to give a cool sophisticated air by keeping the colour palette neutral and letting the beautiful baroque period features and sheer dimensions speak for themselves.

I was first drawn to those fabulous herringbone floors in combination with the minimalist palette of mostly white, cream and black. Of course no Parisian apartment is complete without a touch of gold and the mix of antique mirrors and modern pieces of art and furniture gives this space the wow factor.

Magnifique!

SMALL SPACES | PETER FEHRENTZ BERLIN PIED-A-TERRE

11 February 2014

Peter Fehrentz is one of these creative multi-talents who seems to produce great work whatever craft he lays his hand on – design, interiors, photography… he’s probably also very good at knitting and playing the guitar but that’s just a guess.

His latest project has already been featured all over the internet but I decided to jump on the band wagon and bring you the unique style he created for his 646 sq ft apartment in Berlin. Rather cleverly this pied-a-terre doubles up as an office and serves as a meeting place where new clients can experience his work first hand.

Peter says:

“The northern light, combined with dark colours, creates an artistic, almost dramatic atmosphere, reminiscent of the Flemish Old Masters.”

From the beginning he wanted to create a dark and moody interior, painting the wooden floors a dark eggplant colour and adding some sheer grey curtains by Ulf Moritz for Sahco. The kitchen cabinets are a custom shade of pink and add a little pop of colour in this mainly monochrome space.

Peter also came up with some clever space saving ideas by firstly removing some of the walls therefore opening up the space and then adding some room dividers and sliding doors. The bench seating at the dining table is another deliberate space saver and I adore the iconic trio of Tom Dixon lights above it. The whole place is packed with Peter’s own designs and creations from the canvas covered wardrobe to the custom made sofa and the steel-and-wood storage unit in the kitchen.

You can see more of Peter’s talents in his new book of 48 DIY projects, Made by Yourself (English edition will be published in 2014) with the copper-coloured leather pouffe being just one of the featured projects. Wow!

INTERIORS CRUSH | SHABBY CHIC COTTAGE IN CORNWALL

4 February 2014

Shabby Chic Cornwall by Paul Massey via Stylejuicer

Here’s another reason why I love England: Quirky names for tiny villages, towns and places like Piddletrenthide, Puddletown, Ramsbottom, Affpuddle or Badger’s Mount. It sounds like something out of The Hobbit but I’m convinced J. R. R. Tolkien just took inspiration from reading a map of his native England.

You can imagine my delight when I found out that today’s interior inspiration, a converted fisherman’s net loft, is located in Mousehole, Cornwall. What a cute name and I’m totally crushing on that shabby chic coastal look by owner, serial renovator and interior photographer Paul Massey.

The loft was built in the 1800s and has an upside down layout with bed- and bathrooms on the ground floor and living and kitchen upstairs to take full advantage of the sea views as Mousehole is an attractive tourist destination and fishing port on the far south west coast of England.

The place has got a lovely modern coastal feel with sun bleached wood and eclectic finds from around the world collected during Paul’s travels. The colourpalette has been kept soft with neutral greys, stone and white and a clever layering paint method, applying a light shade over a dark shade before sanding, gives it a lived-in vintage look.

I love the exposed A-frame beams which remind you of the house’s former use as a fishing net loft. Interestingly the flooring throughout is made of cheap but tough scaffolding boards which were washed with white spirit before being sealed with wax oil. Hmm, I’m not sure how smooth this would be underfoot but who cares you’d probably walk around this place in nice thick felt slippers or sheepskin boots before curling up in front of that gorgeous wood burner reading about Middle Earth.

NOTE: If you’ve fallen in love with the place there’s good news! You can rent the adjacent holiday cottage via Unique Home Stays. Score!

INTERIORS CRUSH | AMSTERDAM LOFT RENOVATION

21 January 2014

I saw this stunning conversion of an Amsterdam loft first in the Spanish edition of Elle. They were featuring the architect Laura Alvarez who moved to Amsterdam five years ago and has fallen in love with this cosmopolitan, young and vibrant city.

In 2009 she founded her own architecture practice after her extensive experience working for well known international practices. She defines herself as a sensible and humble architect in love with craftsmanship. Something I can totally relate to in my own field of graphic design.

This duplex loft was a dark and claustrophobic place in a listed building from 1800. It is situated in the picturesque historic heart of Amsterdam overlooking one of the oldest canals, the Singel, and Laura’s challenge was to bring this space into the 21st century.

Amsterdam Loft Renovation by Laura Alvarez Architecture

The owners love to cook, dine and entertain and Laura opened up the whole of the first floor so it’s one continuous space only broken up by a light steel staircase. To brighten up the living area a series of satin-glass walls have been introduced in the upper floor flooding the lower level and the upstairs bathroom with natural light.

On the upper floor are a guest room and the main bedroom with a bathroom situated between them. I love the fact that Laura removed plaster walls to expose the old roof beams to remind you of the buildings age and historic value.

The space feels peaceful and quiet due to the fact that a lot of interfering objects like radiators have been hidden with the help of custom made furniture, not to mention the 11m long in-built wardrobe – what a dream!

I have to say I’m totally crushing on this space with it’s harmonious proportions, finishes and materials used and I’m sure it won’t be the last time Laura will be featured here.
