RESTORED MOUNTAIN RETREAT BY SCOTT AND SCOTT

This restored mountain retreat has been brought into the 21st century by Scott & Scott Architects and ticks all my modern rustic boxes.

Lots of warm wood – from plywood wall dividers to old beams – is tamed by an industrial concrete floor and steel staircase as well as minimal white walls. The simple wooden furniture is covered in fluffy sheep skins and the inbuilt fireplace gives that warm cabin feeling. I love how the light floods through the open steel staircase from the first floor giving it real prominence and drama.

The most stunning feature has to be the kitchen sink though which has been carved out of one single chunky slab of marble. What a feat!

TRAVEL | THE ESTATE TRENTHAM, AUSTRALIA

13 January 2016

the estate trentham, australia, melbourne, lynda gardener, restored, vintage, reclaimed, industrial, rustic, concrete floors, eclectic, quirky, fleamarket, whites, greys, chocolate brown, relaxed, calm, weekend retreat, style, styling, stylist, trend

Continuing with my current obsession of monochrome / browns / natural materials combo I found this gorgeous weekend retreat just outside Melbourne. The Estate Trentham has been lovingly restored and beautifully furnished by interior stylist Lynda Gardener and is set amongst orchards and herb gardens.

Lynda loves discovering treasures at fleamarkets and vintage shops and the house features an eclectic selection of her quirky finds. I’m swooning over the perfect mix of industrial and rustic with concrete floors and worktops in the kitchen, open wooden shelves and lots of weathered wood. Whites, greys and chocolatey browns in combination with lots of cozy textures give the place a relaxed calm feel – ideal for kicking back and taking a digital detox.

If you’re lucky enough to be living nearby take note, you can rent The Estate Trentham here. And you can enlist Lynda’s services via her agency Gardener & Marks.

INTERIOR INSPIRATION | LAURENCE SIMONCINI

21 August 2014

Laurence-Simoncini-Ile-De-Re-by-Karel-Balas-01

Today’s interior inspiration is another ‘corker’ from the Ile De Ré, off the west coast of France. Funnily enough it’s been photographed by Karel Balas whose summer house is also located on the chic island and was featured here on Monday.

It’s the holiday home of Laurence Simoncini, co-founder of Parisian concept store Serendipity and her dramatic and consistent design shows what a creative talent she is. Built in the middle of coastal marshland this single story home with black wooden cladding blends effortlessly into the landscape and I adore the ancient gnarled and twisted tree surrounded by pebbles and the desert like garden design which is easily maintained.

Inside there’s a very quiet and serene atmosphere where the emphasis is on raw and natural materials, textures and fabrics. Polished concrete, lime washed walls, wooden flooring – everything is kept in a wonderful brown, grey and black palette with carefully selected art objects, modern lighting, drift wood seats, hand-thrown ceramics and ornate vintage candle sticks blending perfectly.

No quirky touches or bright colours just an amazingly luxurious interior that still feels inviting. Granted you have to imagine your everyday objects like remote controls, newspapers, post-it notes, socks and shoes flying around. I know I might be stating the obvious but sometimes we forget how highly styled these shots are to show off the interior concept for the glossy magazines.

My favourite pieces have to be the fireplace, the double bed sitting on railway sleepers and how wonderful is that woven nest-like seat Laurence poses on with her adorable children!?

INTERIORS CRUSH | VINTAGE HOUSE DAYLESFORD

2 May 2014

Vintage-House-Daylesford-via-Stylejuicer-12

Happy Friday y’all. My love affair with Australian architecture/design/interiors… basically everything, continues today with an absolute highlight.

It’s the home of stylist Kali Cavanagh who had this 1860s cottage lovingly restored, now sharing it with friends and family as a weekend getaway. Set in Victoria Vintage House Daylesford has a stunning mix of old and new, quirky finds and a wealth of materials on display. Animal skin rugs, rusty iron work, rough wood or smooth marble it’s all under one gorgeous roof.

I love the fact that every room has it’s own character ranging form white Scandi influences in the master bedroom and en-suite to a shabby chic country kitchen with a to-die-for pale blue Chambers oven found in LA.

The living room has a dark and cosy feel reminiscent of an old gentlemens club with brown leather Chesterfield sofa and arm chairs and an antique French cast-iron fireplace above which hangs an original French cafe sign from Côté Provence.

Wherever you look there are eclectic finds from around the world like French stable doors, subway tiles, antique wooden shutters, a vintage fan, a framed Union Jack flag, industrial style pendant lights and a fabulous cast-iron bath.

Kali is clearly a talented interior designer and clever business woman as the house is also available as a location hire for photo shoots. Check out Vintage House Daylesford for more inspiring photographs.

WHITING ARCHITECTS | RESTORED VICTORIAN TERRACE

4 March 2014

Whiting-Architects-Park-Street-via-Stylejuicer02

Whiting Architects seem to be all over the bloggersphere at the moment and rightly so as they’ve produced some beautiful interior designs and high quality work in the past couple of years. The architecture and interior design practice is based in Melbourne and run by husband and wife team Steve and Carole Whiting.

The featured Park Street project is in fact their family home and a great way to introduce and showcase their imaginative interior design and ideas.

The first thing that struck me was how well they’ve adopted and carefully restored the Victorian terrace to suit modern family life with a large kitchen, dining and family space on the ground floor and 2 further self-contained bedrooms and bathrooms upstairs. Always conscious not to rip the historic heart out of the house but keeping many of the original features like wall panellings, arches and mouldings intact.

The interior design is strikingly bold and confident with dark wooden floors and doors contrasting with mostly white walls. The black treads and rails of the staircase are a favourite feature of mine as they seductively lead you upstairs to an all white attic home office and studio space. What a peaceful and calm environment to be creative and one that I could totally see myself in *sigh*.

Their sense of playfulness comes through when you find out that the additional attic bedroom can only be reached via ropes and ladders for Steven’s daughter. What a lovely family home.

NOTE | As you can see Carole has immaculate taste and also sells fabulous homewares online via her Y10store.com with many items sourced or manufactured for specific projects within the practice.
