PLACES TO GO | LOUVRE ABU DHABI BY JEAN NOUVEL

I was seriously excited when I came across photos by Luc Boegly and Sergio Grazia of the new Louvre Abu Dhabi and the more I read up on it the more it becomes transparent just how extraordinary Jean Nouvel’s design is.

His vision of a Souk inspired cluster of buildings floating out in the Persian Gulf on a man-made island took no less than 8 years to complete and is nothing like any gallery you’ve seen before. There is a great time lapse video below which will give you a sense of the proverbial and real mountains that were moved to bring this piece of architecture to life. It’s the French Musee de Louvre’s first outpost and the defining feature of a floating dome spans 180 meters covering semi-outdoor spaces.

I’m absolutely fascinated by the dome which is made from multiple layers of iconic geometric stars made of steel that offer protection from the hot Middle Eastern sunshine yet let just enough light through to create ever changing patterns when walking along the plazas and galleries underneath. This incredible feat of engineering was brought to life by Bruno Happold and Andy Pottinger who had to computer simulate 23 models for the dome before the pattern and the harnessing of light had just the right porosity and was true to Nouvel’s original vision.

I’ve not really had any urges to visit the United Arab Emirates but after seeing these photos I’m fascinated and I suddenly find Abu Dhabi top of my travel list, especially since there will also be a Guggenheim designed by Frank Gehry and the Foster + Partner-designed Zayed National Museum on Saadiyat Island. Watch this space!

PLACES TO GO | FARMER J, LONDON

9 October 2018

I love it when I come across new places to go, especially when they’re on my doorstep, like eaterie / bar / coffee shop Farmer J in the City of London where you can spend happily all day starting with a healthy breakfast, followed by an Israeli inspired lunch and cocktails and dinner in the evening.

A versatile brand and offering that needed an equally versatile space which is designed with a pale wooden clad counter on one side and a herringbone tiled cocktail bar on the opposite. In between you can find a mix of booths and stools as well as communal tables for eating alone, a deux or in larger groups. Melbourne based multidisciplinary studio Biasol was tasked to design the interior and they’ve given it a fresh natural feel with their choice of sage green tiles, pale wooden furniture and use of plants throughout.

Talking about their inspiration for the project Biasol say: “We were inspired by the founder’s Israeli background and the food and architecture of Tel Aviv. With materials, colours and textures evocative of Israeli food and architecture, the space is casual, unpretentious and authentic, balancing functionality and atmosphere.”

I can’t wait to go!

PLACES TO GO | LOFT HOTEL APARTMENT ARNHEM

10 October 2017

loft hotel apartment arnhem, concept store, netherlands, industrial style, loft, old warehouse, style, trend, styling, home furnishings, lighting, furniture, books, ceramics, beauty, fashion, roofterrace, dream space, places to go, travel

You know that I’m partial to a nice loft so when I came across the newly opened LOFT Hotel Apartment Arnhem I was head over heels. It’s a concept store in an old Dutch warehouse, all white washed inside with tall ceilings and original large industrial style windows where they sell all those lovely things you need for a stylish life – from home furnishings to lighting, furniture, books, ceramics, beauty and fashion.

You can also rent two apartments above the shop where everything you see is for sale enabling you to take a teeny tiny bit of the atmosphere back home. The apartment I’m showing you today is apartment 2 with two bedrooms, a separate lounge area with kitchen block and a spacious roofterrace overlooking the city.

It’s pretty much my dream space and I’m already looking into things to do in Arnhem – watch this space!

PS: You might also like this concept store in Antwerp and this hip refurbished loft in Tribeca, NYC.

PLACES TO GO | USINE, STOCKHOLM

7 September 2015

Places-To-Go-Usine-ArchDaily-01

Morning peeps! After last week’s launch of Wild Boys & Girls I’ve got my interiors hat on today and want to share this beautiful former sausage factory in Stockholm with you.

Renovated by renowned designer Richard Lindvall this brand new concept is called Usine and houses a restaurant, bar, cafe, take away, reception and conference spaces. Tough the menu is mostly french the interior combines Scandinavian minimalism with an industrial edge. Lindvall admits “I was a bit afraid of making it too cold, it was important to create a warmth in the environments, but still keep it raw and fresh.”

I don’t think he needs to worry. The space is a great success in my eyes and just confirms my desire to pay the Swedish capital a visit.

PLACES TO GO | VILLA VERGELLE, TUSCANY

24 April 2015

Villa-Vergelle-Tuscany-via-Stylejuicer-01

All this Spring sunshine has started to make me think about holidays and as if by magic – other might say serendipity – Villa Vergelle pops up.

Turns out I’ve admired this holiday rental for a good 5 months now as it’s featured on the cover of Country Living’s Modern Rustic issue #02 [can’t wait for issue #03 which should be out any day now] so I was ecstatic to find some more photos online.

This Italian country home is a great example of adapting an old house and making it fit for 21st century living. The interior features industrial elements like exposed steel girders, pipes and ceiling lighting as well as polished concrete flooring and a hand-built kitchen with cabinets made from wide recycled planks and open shelving.

The layout is family friendly with a large kitchen / dining / living area on the ground floor and super cool in-built bunk beds for the kiddos upstairs. All beds, cabinets and shelves are custom-built from recycled wood and I love the worn, slightly burnt patina which contrasts so well with the industrial elements.

A dream home for me and a successful renovation project where the owners sensitively opened up the previously small windows to let in more light and added wooden shutters to control the heat in the height of summer.

You can book a stay in this delightful luxury space via SpecialUmbria.
