DOTTIR | NORDIC RESTAURANT IN BERLIN MITTE

27 September 2016

dottir, nordic restaurant, berlin, mitte, hip, deconstructed, renovation, original details, vintage, antique, lighting, bar stools, Victoria Eliasdóttir, interior design, interiors, decor, style, juxtaposition, old, new, drab, glamour, abstract paintings

I couldn’t resist showing you this stripped back but still quietly glamorous interior of restaurant Dottir in Berlin’s hip Mitte district where renowned Icelandic chef Victoria Eliasdóttir serves fresh Nordic cuisine.

The grand dimensions date back to the 1880s and many of the original details remain. I love how the interior design has been carefully kept in a state of semi renovation with some beautiful vintage items like the 1930s bar stools, large abstract paintings and some antique lighting. It’s a great juxtaposition of old and new, drab and glamour and feeds the imagination.

FUNCTION AND FORM 03 | NINA+CO AT DEAN STREET CAFE

It’s not even a year since Tiff and I set up Function+Form with the hope to bring like-minded interior and design lovers together and stimulate engagement on a face-to-face level. I can not tell you how excited we were to see so many lovely people turn up to Function and Form 03 last Saturday for breakfast at the Dean Street Cafe in London to hear the story behind this exceptional venue and it’s interior designer Nina Woodcroft.

Though life is becoming evermore transient Tiff and I feel that values such as good design, quality, form, function and sustainability remain a constant which is our benchmark when deciding on where to hold our events and who to partner with.

The Dean Street Cafe owned and run by UK charity Centrepoint lent itself perfectly to hosting Function+Form 03 and we were thrilled when Nina agreed to fly over from Amsterdam to be with us on the day and talk us through her professional journey as well as her concept behind the interior design of the cafe.

For me Nina personifies the apprenticeship concept when she took the brave step straight after school to start work immediately. Though not as a formal apprentice but as a receptionist in an interior design firm where her attitude, engagement and curiosity for the industry saw her progressing to design assistant and designer before being made partner working on multi-million pound projects from hotels to residential and retail – all within the space of ten years.

The experience gave her confidence to set up her own studio in 2014 where she can now adhere to her own standards of sustainable sourcing and low-impact on the environment as well as fitting projects around her passion for travelling. Like many self-employed people it’s all in the mix for her and though she does have her ‘bread and butter’ clients she makes a deliberate choice to work on social enterprise projects to fulfil her duty of increasing client and consumer awareness and promoting the notion of wellbeing.

Speaking about her project at Dean Street Cafe she says:

“It was a privilege to work with Centrepoint. This was an opportunity to give the Client something interesting and creative to help them stand out from a large crowd and to offer Soho’s locals and visitors a fresh, conscious and sustainable alternative. I wanted the space to reflect the sanctuary from the outside world that the charity provides for vulnerable young people. The opportunity to be part of a busy, vibrant space for homeless young people to turn their lives around was a huge inspiration.”

Centrepoint in turn couldn’t be happier with the solution as John Raynham, Head of Innovation and Enterprise at Centrepoint, states:

“Nina and Centrepoint were on the same page from the start. We both wanted an environmentally and socially sustainable solution and this theme runs throughout the project. Our aim is to motivate homeless young people to get into work and Nina has created a beautiful and authentic environment that will inspire those working here to excel.”

For me this last sentence is the essence of why (interior) design is so important to us: it makes us better people! Our surroundings have a huge impact on us as human beings and at the cafe young homeless people can get training to become a barista or work in the hospitality sector.

I’ve totally fallen in love with Nina’s simple and modern design, her combination of materials, attention to detail, the different levels of lighting and clever design elements like the pegboard style wall and integrated seating at the large feature windows. It’s a totally flexible venue space and tables and chairs can be easily hidden in the deep cupboards that form part of the pegboard wall. Available for venue hire, functions and training purposes during the week the cafe comes into it’s own at the weekend when it not offers you delicious locally sourced food and drinks but one of the only sunny terraces in the center of town.

Go and check it out and support the good work!

On another note… Nina’s favourite meal of the day is breakfast and she has recently released a ceramic breakfast collection which I’ve written about here. There are some stunning special edition mugs which can be purchased from At The Table via this link.

Our breakfast was sponsored by the lovely ladies from Luminary Bakery – another of Nina’s social enterprise projects. Exceptional Juice and Mylk from The East London Juice Company – resident at the Ace Hotel. And of course by head chef Dean Masters who managed to put everything together in record time.

AT THE TABLE SUMMER CAMP WITH REN LONDON

25 August 2016

at the table, events, creative platform, british food culture, fabric printing, workshop, magazine, lithuania, linen, ren london, ren valuzyte, block printing, meditation, pattern, manual, slow living, town hall hotel, creative, miranda york, east london

Last weekend I was lucky to take some time off from the crazy circus that is family life during the summer holidays. I just got back from almost 4 weeks of slow living in Northern Germany and had to adjust to London life again. What better way than to take part in a fabric printing workshop organised by creative platform At The Table with Ren London in the beautiful setting that is the Town Hall hotel in Bethnal Green, East London.

The workshop was part of At The Table’s summer camp series hosted by some of their favourite chefs, creatives and makers learning a new skill and meeting like-minded people.

At The Table describe themselves as a creative platform that explores and celebrates British food culture. They are interested in the stories, ideas and people behind what we eat and drink and aim to look at food from a fresh perspective through events, print, online and film.

So far so promising and I headed off to London’s East End having a good snoop round the beautiful Town Hall hotel before meeting Miranda from ATT and Ren as well as a sociable mixed bunch of men and women all curious to learn about block printing.

The event kicked off with a glass of prosecco before Ren introduced herself and her company as well as the qualities of linen which she sources from the same factory her grandmother worked at as a weaver for 40 years in Lithuania. After an introduction and demonstration of the block printing technique we were let loose on our chosen piece of fabric and soon everyone was fixated and the room went quiet in relaxed concentration. Ren likens block printing to meditation where your mind is utterly focussed on the process and I too found myself absorbed by the manual process of painting and printing. We all produced some beautiful patterns and I look forward to dressing the table with my printed piece of linen, one of the few fabrics that gets softer and more beautiful over time.

It’s events like these that remind me why I love living in this vibrant city. It may be a challenge to practice slow living but it invigorates your creative side every day.

For more workshops and events and how you can get involved with At The Table head to their website or check out their new magazine which will launch in the autumn.

PUGLIA | KATE HOLSTEIN FOR CEREAL MAGAZINE

1 August 2016

kate holstein, cereal magazine, blog, read cereal, photography, puglia, italy, peninsula, rustic landscape, whitewashed towns, abundant agriculture, wine, olive oil, durum wheat, pasta making, scenery, quiet, calm, sophisticated style, timeless

I’m absolutely loving these shots by Kate Holstein of Puglia for Cereal Magazine. Her quiet calm and sophisticated style is timeless and I’d happily frame each shot and put it up on my wall.

“This part of Italy is one of Europe’s most abundant agricultural hubs, producing much of the country’s wine, olive oil, produce, and the hard durum wheat used to make pasta. The cuisine alone is reason enough to make the trip, but then there’s the scenery…”

Head over to Cereal’s journal to see and read more.

TRAVEL | CITIZENM FLAGSHIP HOTEL AT THE TOWER OF LONDON

29 July 2016

citizenm hotel, flagship, london, tower of london, east london liquor company, we blog design, comfort, technology, mobile citizen, quirky collectables, state-of-the-art, design hotel, british, travellers, canteenM, coffeeM, societyM, cloudM bar, tower bridge, gherkin, shard, ancient, history, tradition, reinterpretation, style, styling, chill, relax, britart

So, here’s the thing… I totally believe in (blogging) karma and sometimes, just very occasionally amongst the hundreds of hustling emails a very special invite lands in my inbox: How about a night at the new citizenM flagship hotel at the Tower of London including a cocktail session with the East London Liquor company and mingling with the crew from We Blog Design? Topped off by a test sleep in one of the largest, comfiest beds ever and waking up with stunning view across The Tower of London and the Shard. Eeeeek!

It took me all of 3 seconds to reply with a resounding YESSS and last Friday afternoon I kissed the kids and the cowboy good-bye and after a sweaty tube journey found myself stumbling out of Tower Hill station and literally next door to citizenM where I checked myself in within seconds at one of the state-of-the-art terminals.

Funnily enough, I don’t often get the opportunity to stay in design hotels so curiously I investigated every nook and cranny and was blown away by the massive (rain dance) shower head which took care of the city grime, the powerful hairdryer, the plugsocket catering for all sorts of crazy shaped plugs from around the world so you won’t need silly adaptors, the iPad in each room that lets you control your mood lights and temperature, TV and your travels around this exhilarating ancient new city. Not to mention the exquisite Vitra furniture and the quirky British inspired collectables in the lobby’s oversized shelves, from a stuffed boar’s head, vintage cricket bats, antique leather suitcases and kitsch plates featuring the Royals to more predictable red post boxes and London double decker busses. The point is, this is how tourists – or to stick with citizenM terminology ‘mobile citizens’ – see Britain, that’s why a majority of people come here.

Maybe you and me (and those who voted to remain in the EU) might be slightly tired of the Union Jack, the Empire, tea time, cricket, history, traditions and Britart but citizenM have pulled off a stylish reinterpretation of the aforementioned by adding the latest technology and travel comforts, a bit like a cover version of an old classic which you can’t help but sing along to.

The point is citizenM have literally thought of every travellers needs and created a wonderfully comfortable experience for tired bodies, hungry stomachs and curious minds. Besides the stylish large lobby with plenty of spaces to chill and relax as well as iMac’s and printers free of charge, there is:

canteenM, the open kitchen format with its signature style bar which is open round the clock serving favourites like sushi, salads, spicy curries and opulent carrot cakes.

coffeeM right next to the tube exit, where both guests and locals will be able to get freshly brewed coffee and pastries.

collectionM a brand new retail concept of an exclusively curated collection showcasing travel accessories, art, books, interiors and cute design objects from more than twenty innovative and creative brands. All available to purchase and ship to your home should you wish to.

societyM with it’s business meeting rooms that are both creative and functional on the 7th floor mezzanine level with breathtaking views and more quirky items on display.

And last but not least the spectacular cloudM bar with its incredible terrace, a wraparound double height space offering what must be one of the most dramatic views of London’s skyline with the Tower of London, Tower Bridge and its iconic skyscrapers including the Gherkin and the Shard. It’s a stunning venue and the view gives you London in one clean sweep: Ancient history next to cutting edge architecture all served with some delicious cocktails.

Boy, did we have a blast! #WeBlogDesign #citizenMlondon
