With the shop opening, blogging and design work my desk is overflowing and I’ve taken a shine to this new IKEA Alex Desk. It’s designed by Johanna Asshoff and has plenty inbuilt storage as well as space for hiding ugly cables.
Anna Mårselius did a fantastic styling job perfectly capturing the slightly darker autumn mood that’s slowly creeping in.

Don’t you just love the dark grey colour!?

CELEBRATING 60 YEARS OF SERIES 7 CHAIR

3 December 2014

”series

The Series 7™ chair designed by Arne Jacobsen back in the 1960ies has become a design icon and I love it’s form and function in equal measure.

To celebrate the diversity of contexts that this iconic chair has performed in during its first 60 years of life – from MoMA in New York to Centre Bakery in Tokyo Fritz Hansen have created two jubilee models in special colours. A masculine edition with a dark blue lacquer shell and powder-coated burnished legs. And a feminine edition dressed in pale pink lacquer with 24-ct gold-plated legs.

Explaining the design background and inspiration for the jubilee edition Fritz Hansen says:

The 60th Anniversary Edition of the Series 7 is inspired by the notion that ‘opposites attract’, a key theme in interior design right now. The 60th Anniversary Edition of the Series 7 chair is all about contrast – in materials and colours. While the deep dark blue and the pale pink may contrast each other, they also interact to create a calm and elegant look, attracting and complementing one another. To mark the 60th anniversary of this iconic chair, each chair has a golden plate mounted on the underside of the shell.

I don’t know about you but I want BOTH. #modernproblems

RALPH LAUREN | DOWNTOWN MODERN AW14

22 September 2014

ralph lauren, downtown modern, collection, aw14, fall, holiday, season, country in the city, navajo, cypress wood, oak, textiles, fabrics, cashmere, mohair, graphic, black and white, prints, fulton pendant, Equilibrium table lamp, luxury, comfort

You’ve gotta love Ralph Lauren. His rags to riches story is well documented and there’s barely a harder working man in the business who despite his age is still very much hands on and signs off on every single piece as I found out at the press launch for his new AW14 Home collection last week.

There were of course the over-the-top sumptuously dressed beds with a multitude of delicate and luxurious fabrics and trims but I was pleasantly surprised to find a pared back version in the ‘Downtown Modern’ collection. A kind of country in the city style with ebonized oak, cypress wood and textiles inspired by Navajo prints adding a touch of warmth.

The graphic prints and black and white palette give a modern feel and I like how a few industrial piece have been incorporated – my favourites being the large Fulton pendant and Equilibrium table lamp. The throws and cushions are beautifully tactile in mohair and cashmere oozing Ralph Lauren luxury and comfort. At one point I just wanted to curl up on the sofa with one of the cashmere rugs and have the superb caterers feed me teeny tiny eggs benedict and blueberry pancakes but luckily my manners got the better of me.

I have to concede that I’m not the target market but it is interesting to see how Ralph is reaching out to new customers. I also like to believe that he has a wry sense of humour as the press shot of the loaded jeep outside an old red brick factory made me smile. What better way to conjure up his country in the city style than to include some vintage skis, freshly chopped logs and a fluffy white American Eskimo dog?

You’ve gotta love Ralph Lauren!

PLACES TO GO | CLARRODS COPENHAGEN

2 July 2014

places to go, clarrods, copenhagen, furniture, design, store, shop, bar, cafe, claus larsen, paulina arcklin, photography, vintage, industrial, creative fulfilment, trend, travel

Ok, if I could move into this shop I totally would. Not only is it in beautiful design heaven Copenhagen but it also comes with a bar/cafe and will soon be serving food I’m being told by the owner Claus Larsen.

Claus used to have a career in ‘money’ (erm… something lost in translation here but I get the drift) before he opened Clarrods – a fabulous furniture shop selling mostly Claus’ own designs and some hand-picked decorative vintage pieces. He’s also trained as a welder and has two other guys helping him produce a variety of tables and benches with mostly wooden tops on steel frames.

I saw the shots of his store on Paulina Arcklin’s site, a Finnish photographer who now lives in Amsterdam. She was scouting for material for one of her books when she passed Clarrods and took this beautiful series. When I got in touch with her to ask permission she emphasised that nothing is styled in these shots which makes them even more special.

This shop is pretty much bang on my current taste for industrial vintage and I love the fact that Claus included a bar/cafe because ‘it would be cool to try that out and why not’.

I’ve got enormous respect for people who decide to switch careers and – once again – it shows that there’s nothing better than creative fulfilment. As they say if you do what you love you won’t have to do a day’s work in your life.

I hope you’ll pop by Clarrods if you’re in the area and make sure to soak up the atmosphere with a little drink or two. A definite must-see on my own CPH list.

COOL STUFF | IKEA PS STORAGE 2014

28 March 2014

Ikea-PS-2014-via-Share-Design-09

Amongst other oddities I have a slight obsession with storage, putting things away, organising and labelling – so I use the term slight loosely in this context.

Imagine my delight when I saw that IKEA have extended their PS storage collection this year. Every piece comes from a select group of designers working in collaboration with the in-house design team so you get the best of both worlds: Flat pack heaven (or hell) on one side and cutting edge design on the other.

In case you wondered I actually love putting those flat packs together. To me it’s a giant jigsaw puzzle for adults and I feel just a little bit smug when every last screw is used and I can add another allen key to my growing collection.

Favourites from the IKEA PS storage collection are the Ewall Shelf by Keiji Ashizawa and the Ebenchi by Anna Efverlundi. Lovely to see the company evolving with their customers but let’s hope they’re going to keep the iconic little man you can find on every instruction manual.
