Hello y’all, did you have a good Christmas break!? We had a lovely relaxing and super cozy time at home with the kiddos. Open fires, lovely food and some more baking – this time with just one of the two little lions which was a bit more relaxing than the previous experience [you can read about it here].

The break was a great opportunity to recharge batteries which will be running on full power in the next few days as we’re moving home. Eek! Despite the obvious upheaval and my fear of mess I’m quite looking forward to settling into a new place and it seems appropriate to start the new year with a clean slate. Cross your fingers the good ol tinternet will be switched over tomorrow as promised. Yeah, right! #modernproblems #donttrustutilitiescompanies

CHRISTMAS BAKING WITH KIDS

23 December 2014

Christmas-Baking-With-Kids-By-Stylejuicer-01

Christmas baking with kids seemed a good idea at the time! I blame all those beautiful Instagram shots of happy kiddos licking spoons and concentrating hard on cutting out elaborate shapes like reindeer or proudly presenting their gingerbread houses with neat rows of chocolate buttons and haribo as decorations (though I have a sneaky suspicion mum might have had a hand it the latter).

Nostalgia also got the better of me wanting to carry on the Christmas baking tradition and remembering fondly baking cookies with my mum and grandmother during the festive season. They never complained that I was hard to manage why should my kids be any different!? And really… how hard can it be!?

Truth is, really, really hard! And even harder when you’re trying to get some half descent shots done of the whole process with the ridiculous ambition to later write a blog post about it. Ha! What a fool! I must have lost my mind or at least temporarily forgotten that my kids are boys and very lively, on top of both being under 4 years of age.

In between my shouting ‘don’t throw that on the floor’, ‘cover your mouth when you sneeze/cough’ and ‘just a small hand full of flour, not two hands’ as well as rolling dough, cutting neat stars, trying not to burn the cookies in the oven and preventing toy cars to run through cookie dough I managed to snap a few shots on my iPhone and DLSR which now needs a good clean after getting covered in flour.

I guess it was a tad ambitious trying to carry out this wholesome act under the illusion of being an earth-mother – I really am not (!) and take my hat off to all pre-school teachers and nursery staff who deal with this sort of thing day in day out.

On the plus side the kids loved the experience and the little one was delighted that he could actually eat the ‘playdough’. Plus we now have a tin full of super duper gingerbread cookies – click here for recipe – and I live to tell the tale and write the blog post. All good!

Now, should I tell the kids that I’ve got 2 more batches of dough in the freezer?

NOTE: The fab wooden cutting board with leather handle in the last shot is from The Hackney Draper which was kindly given to me by StreetHub – but more about them in January.

CONTEMPORARY CHRISTMAS STYLING

The countdown to Christmas has started and this will be the last festive home I’ll feature in 2014. Eek! But before I go into my usual where-has-this-year-gone rant enjoy the joyful styling in this Danish new-built. Yes, it’s a new-built with classic proportions that looks like it’s been there forever.

I’m totally swooning over the elegant interior with polished herringbone floors and tasteful modern furniture with some rustic vintage pieces thrown in and animal skins to make it cosy for winter. The contemporary Christmas decor is very subtle consisting mostly of candles and some natural elements like pine cones, evergreens and antlers. How cute is the metal candle holder in the kitchen, spelling JUL the Danish word for Christmas!?

My favourite room has to be the classy minimalist kitchen with floating white cabinets and a black island unit. I can just imagine the whole family gathering around here on Christmas Day for some mulled wine loosening everybody up for carol singling and dancing round the tree. They sure know how to be merry.

A CHRISTMAS WEEKEND IN BATH

19 December 2014

Oh, how I enjoyed my much needed girlie break last weekend in Bath to visit one of my besties. It is the perfect place to get into the Christmas spirit and our trip has by now become somewhat of a tradition, along with plenty of shopping, mulled wine, good food and general tomfoolery.

The mostly Georgian architecture is stunning and there’s a great array of independent shops, bars and cafes – though if you ask the locals it’s getting way too ‘chainy’ in the last couple of years. The main attraction this time of year is the Christmas market and the ever expanding ‘chalet’ which puts you straight into apres ski mood. If you don’t care for glitz, flashing lights and Christmas tat Bath is (still) the place to go.

We were lucky that Saturday was a proper winters day; freezing but gloriously sunny and perfect for a walk in the countryside. We visited a local food festival at Great Chalfield Manor and had a bit of a Downton Abbey experience in the Great Hall with champagne, carol singers, a roaring fire and lots of stag heads lined up on the wall. Interesting how this quintessential English way of life just carries on into the 21st century.

If you enjoy my snaps from the weekend you can always follow along on Instagram.
